Wasei-eigo

''Wasei-eigo'' ( ''wasei eigo'', lit. "Made-in-Japan English") are Japanese language|Japanese pseudo-Anglicisms : English language|English constructions not in use in Anglophone countries nor by English native speakers, but only by speakers of Japanese. A more general term for made-in-Japan foreign words is ''gairaigo|wasei-gairaigo'', which usually applies to words made from European languages. One example is the word ''desk'' (: ''desuku''). It seems like perfectly good English, but in Japan, it is a title for a person. ''Tanaka-desk'' would be a reporter or editor in charge of a department at a newspaper (for example, the city desk). Similarly, ''mansion'' (:ja:: ''manshon'') refers not to a mansion, but an apartment or its building. Wasei-eigo words can form compounds with Japanese words, for example, ''okushon'' () combines ''oku'', meaning hun! dred million, with "mansion" to form a new word meaning "luxury apartment". This is actually a pun, since the word "man" means "ten thousand" in Japanese: "oku-shon" is ten thousand times more than "man-shon". Sometimes, two English words with their normal meanings will be combined to form a new compound word. One famous instance is ''famicom'' (: ''famikon'' or :ja:: ''family computer''), a portmanteau of "family" and "computer", meaning a video game system (especially, but not necessarily, ''the'' Famicom, known to the rest of the world as the Nintendo Entertainment System). Sometimes the resulting words make as much, or more, sense than their standard English equivalents. (see: ''fried potato'' or ''recycle shop'' in the List of Gairaigo and Wasei-eigo terms|examples.)Some wasei-eigo have in turn been borrowed as pseudo-Anglicisms in other coun! tries. For example, ''apatu'' in Kore! an langu age|Korean is clearly borrowed from the Japanese word ''apāto'', not the English word ''apartment''.For an extensive list of terms, see the List of Gairaigo and Wasei-eigo terms.

Beautiful pictures, it gives you plenty of things to talk about andthink about if you are planning a wine cellar. This book does not give a lot of details on why things are done the way they are - it is more of an idea book.I've read a few other books on the details of wine cellar construction, so I already knew why things are done as they are in many of the pictures. This book gave me tons of ideas and helped me spark my creative juices. Troy

Wine_cellar

A Wine cellar is a storage room for wine in bottles or barrels, or more rarely in carboys, amphoras or plastic containers. Wine cellars are usually located completely underground, and often have direct contact to the surrounding soil via a gap in the foundations.Wine cellars offer the opportunity to protect alcoholic beverages from potentially harmful external influences, providing darkness and a constant temperature. They are often used as stylish surroundings for wine tasting.

I have enjoyed all of the books in Cahill's series, and consider him an excellent writer that provides thoughtful insight. This latest edition, however, is not on the same level as his other works.I think he fails to really, concretely show the reader what the Greek contribution is like he does in the rest of the series. Also, the narrative drags at times, especially in the "How to Think" chapter. This is a worhwhile read, but disappointing after reading his other books.

The_Wine_Group

The Wine Group, known for its Franzia "wine in a box", is the third largest wine company in the world, behind Constellation Brands and the E & J Gallo Winery. The company was first founded in 1981 with a management buyout of the wine assets of the Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of New York. Its origins trace back to the Franzia Brothers winery from California, which was later sold to the Coca-Cola Bottling Co.In addition to Franzia, The Wine Group also produces the Concannon brand of wines, as well as brands including Casarsa (an Italian wine), Corbett Canyon, Fish Eye, Foxhorn, Austin Vale, Glen Ellen, Mogen David (kosher), Morassutti (Italian) and Tribuno wines. Several premium wine-producing ventures in Chile, South Africa, Australia, and New Zealand are expected to be operational in the near future. The company has one of the most efficient business-models in the industry, winning the "Winery of the Year Award" at the 2005 Unified Wine and Grape Symposium, where some 10,000 ind! ustry leaders and more than 500 vendors representing growers, vintners, and allied industry members had gathered.Key personnel as of 2005 include President Art Cioka, CEO David Kent, CFO Ken Lizer, and VP's John Sexton on the East Coast and Thomas Stine on the West Coast.

Anti_Money_Laundering

Anti Money Laundering is a term mainly used in the finance and legal industries to describe the legal controls that require financial institutions and other regulated entities to prevent or report money laundering activities. For example, a bank must perform due diligence by having proof of a customer's identity and that the use, source and destination of funds do not involve money laundering. United States federal law related to money laundering is implemented under the Bank Secrecy Act of 1970 as amended by anti-money laundering acts up to the present.

Glassphalt

Glassphalt is a variety of asphalt that uses crushed glass. It has been used as an alternative to conventional bituminous asphalt pavement since the early 1970s. Glassphalt must be properly mixed and placed if it is to meet roadway pavement standards, requiring some modifications to generally accepted asphalt procedures.Generally, there is about 10%-20% glass by weight in glassphalt.

Palm_wine

Palm wine, also called palm toddy, is an alcoholic beverage created from the sap of various species of palm tree. The sap is collected by cutting between the ''kernels'' of the tree. Some sort of container, such as a gourd, is left to collect the draining sap for a day or two. The sap begins fermentation|fermenting immediately after collection due to natural microorganisms in the air (this is often spurred by residual yeast left in the collecting container). Within two hours, fermentation yields an aromatic wine of up to 4% alcohol content, mildly intoxication|intoxicating and sweet. The wine may be allowed to ferment longer, up to a day, to yield a stronger, more sour and acidic taste, which some people prefer. Longer fermentation produces vinegar instead of stronger wine. The wine is drunk fairly soon after creation, since it has a short shelf life. It is especially common in India and coastal areas of Africa. The sap used to create palm wine is most often taken from wild d! ate (fruit)|date palms such as the ''Phoenix sylvestrix'', the palmyra, and the ''Caryota urens''; oil|palm oil palm such as ''Elaeis guineense''; ''Raphia'' palms; ''Kithul'' palms; or ''Nipa'' palms. Coconut palms and taller palms, such as the ''Borassus'', may also be tapped, but seldom are (the wine of coconut palms is generally known as ''toddy'').Palm wine may be distillation|distilled to create a stronger drink, which goes by different names depending on the region (examples are ''arrack'', ''village gin'', and ''village whiskey''). It may also be evaporation|evaporated to leave an unrefined sugar called ''jaggery''.

Vin_gris

Vin gris is white wine made from red grapes, in particular pinot noir. Pinot noir is a black grape, but can also be used to make ros? or white wine. When the grapes are brought to the winery and crushed, the juice is run off and removed from contact with the skin, leaving the colour and flavour compounds from the skin behind. The juice is then typically fermented in stainless steel tanks before being bottled shortly after, without any ageing in oak barrels. Producing a small volume of Vin gris (or ros?) can also be used as a technique to improve Pinot noir. Removing some clear juice increases the concentration of colour and flavour compounds from the skins in the remaining juice intended for making red wine.Champagne (beverage)|Champagne is often made using this process, when it is known as ''blanc de noirs''.

I think this game came out in 2000, and I've played it just about every evening since the day I bought it five years ago. There are only four campaigns, two russian and two german, but there are a number of options you can play with to increase the difficulty of the game in the way YOU want it to be difficult, and each setting can be set for both the player and the computer - more/fewer units, fog of war, good/bad supplies, good/bad reinforcements, leader quality, there are about a dozen settings like these. That, and the fact that the campaigns branch out into different directions, so you're not just playing the same 8 scenarios in the same order like some games. Overall, I couldn't be happier. The fact that there are plenty of used copies floating around makes it cheap to boot. Go for it!

Ratafia

Ratafia is a liqueur or cordial flavoured with peach or cherry kernels, bitter almonds, or other fruits; many different varieties are made. The same name is given to a flavouring essence resembling bitter almonds, and also to a light biscuit. The word is adapted from the French language|French of the 17th century. Walter William Skeat (Etym. Dict., 1910) quotes as a possible origin a combination of Malay Peninsula|Malay ''araq'', arak (liqueur)|arak, and ''tafia'', rum. An alternative etymology proposes that the name derives from a custom of drinking to the ''ratification'' of a deal or treaty.
